Rhythmic Breathing 2

In this technique, each phase of the breath is counted to equalize the inhalation and exhalation of the breath, and then the exhalation count is gradually increased until it is twice as long as the inhalation. When we manipulate the breath by increasing the exhalation to be twice as long as the inhalation, we soothe the sympathetic discharge and allow the parasympathetic nervous system to come into balance . This improves digestion,lowers heart rate and blood pressure, and creates a relaxation response.

The continual attention to the counting also improves concentration and focus. The mind is occupied by the practice and can let go of thought patterns that a re creating stress, resulting in introversion and relaxation.
