Deborah A. Smith AYT, RYT, CYTDeborah was first introduced to yoga by her college basketball coach, who incorporated asanas into her team's practice routines. Deborah found that the asanas helped her develop both strength and flexibility, and began using them to enhance her performance not only in basketball, but also in swimming and cycling. She began studying yoga at the Atma Center soon after it opened, adding the benefits of pranayama and meditation to her practice.
Deborah enjoys teaching yoga for the same reasons that she enjoys her work as a massotherapist. She has had a long fascination with anatomy and physiology. She likes helping people learn more about and become more present in their bodies, both through bodywork and yoga.
Deborah spent 20 years as a clinical anesthetist, including 7 years specializing in pediatric anesthesia. She has had a private massage practice for 11 years and has done bodywork for HIV patients through the Open House. Yoga has proved invaluable to her in managing her own aging process, as well as helping her to cope with the challenges of parenting her two wonderful daughters.
In her limited spare time, Deborah enjoys swimming, reading, traveling, birding, and doing needlework.
