Maitri means "friendliness"
As a young pup, "Masie" was found wandering the streets of Canton and taken to the pound. She was saved from being put to death by a woman who could not keep her, but was willing to foster her until she could find a forever home. Masie's online photo charmed Swami Atmarupa, director of the Atma Center. After a face-to-snout meeting, Atmarupa was impressed - the shepherd-greyhound mix was adorable and had a remarkably calm disposition for a 10-month-old.
Atmarupa adopted Masie on a Sunday. That Tuesday evening the puppy sat on a mat at the front of the yoga studio and helped teach an hour-and-a-half long class. The next day, the staff debated on a new yoga name for the dog. They finally settled on the name Maitri - the Sanskrit word for friendliness - with high hopes that she would come to embody that wonderful quality as she settled into her job as greeter and teacher.
Maitri has now become a fixture at the Atma Center and is well-loved by students and staff. She frequently assists with teaching classes and particularly enjoys demonstrating her favorite practices - downward-facing dog and deep relaxation.
